So you want to start DJing: the honest beginner setup

You do not need a club rig to learn. The gap between "I want to try this" and "I'm mixing tracks tonight" is smaller and cheaper than the gear ads make it look. Start with a controller.

Get an all-in-one controller, not separates

A 2-channel DJ controller plugs into your laptop over USB and gives you two decks, a crossfader, and a mixer in one box — everything you need to blend two tracks. It's the cheapest way in, and it's fast. You can graduate to standalone CDJs and a proper mixer once you start gigging; on day one they're money you don't need to spend.

The one accessory that isn't optional

Closed-back DJ headphones. You cue the next track in your headphones — hearing it lined up *before* the crowd does — while the current one plays out loud. Cheap open earbuds leak and can't do this. Good DJ cans let you hear the difference between guessing and knowing.

Software: start free

Most controllers come with a free tier of the big software (rekordbox, Serato, djay). It's plenty to learn on. Don't pay for the pro version until you've hit its limits.

Learn to hear it, not just press sync

Modern software has a sync button, and that's fine. But spend time beatmatching by ear too: nudging one track's tempo and phase until the two kicks lock. It's the skill that lets you feel a mix instead of trusting a button, and it makes everything after it easier. Practice with music you actually love; the hours disappear.
