Your first rave: what to bring and how to stay in it

Your first one should be about the music, not the mistakes. A little prep and you can relax into it.

Before you go

Know the basics of the venue. Where it is, when the act you came for plays, how you're getting home. Tell someone your plan. Charge your phone and eat something real beforehand. If you're going with people, agree on a meeting spot in case you get separated and phones die.

What to actually bring

Keep it light and hands-free:

• High-fidelity earplugs — the single best thing you can pack (see protecting your hearing).
• A way to stay hydrated — many venues have free water; bring a collapsible bottle if they allow it.
• A portable charger — a dead phone is how nights go sideways.
• ID, a little cash, and a small crossbody or fanny pack — everything you need, nothing you'll lose.
• Broken-in, comfortable shoes — you'll be on your feet for hours.

Staying in it (and safe)

Hydrate *steadily* — but you don't need to chug: drinking huge amounts of water very fast is its own risk (water intoxication is real), so sip, don't gulp gallons. Take breaks somewhere cooler when you need them, and find where the water and the medics are early. Look out for your crew — go in together, leave together, check in. Don't take anything from strangers. And if someone's in trouble, get help fast; looking after each other is the whole culture — that's what the scene actually runs on.

• Sip water, don't chug it. Take cool-down breaks.
• Meeting spot + charged phone = no lost-friend panic.
• See someone struggling? Get medical help — that's the move.
